Trip to Iran
در اسفند ماه سال گذشته سفری به ایران داشتم و پیش از نوروز به
آمریکا بازگشتم. پیش از این، آخرین باری که دیداری از ایران داشتم شانزده سال پیش
در تیرماه سال 1377 یعنی کمتر از یکسال پس از آغاز ریاست جمهوری محمد خاتمی بود و
درباره سفرم در اینترنت در آنزمان نوشتم. اين بار نیز سفرم کمتر از یکسال پس از
شروع ریاست جمهوری حسن روحانی بود.
سفرم به ایران شخصی و خانوادگی بود. با هیچ روزنامه نگار یا
فعال سیاسی حرف نزدم. اما تنها از صحبت با مردم عادی، می توانم درباره ایران بگویم
که احساسی نظیر سال اول ریاست جمهوری محمد خاتمی نبود، چیزی که برداشت فعالین سیاسی
در خارج در مورد ایران در دوران ریاست جمهوری حسن روحانی است.
جزئیات ملاحظاتم را در مقاله ای به فارسی در اردیبهشت ماه به
رشته تحریر در آوردم و هیچ چیز دیگری نمی توانم به آن اضافه کنم (1). هنگامیکه به
تهران رفتم، پیش دهنیتم این بود که تحول رویدادها نظیر نخستین سال ریاست جمهوری
خاتمی است اما ملاحظاتم، با ناباوری خود، همانگونه که در آن مقاله اشاره کرده ام،
چیز دیگری نشان میداد.
با گذشت زمان بویژه در چند هفته اخیر، بنظر می رسد لازم است
آنهایی که در خارج زندگی می کنند فکر خود را در مورد رویدادهای ایران مورد تجدید
نظر قرار دهند.

I had a
trip to Iran last February and returned to the U.S. before Norouz. The last time
I had visited Iran was 16 years ago in July of 1998, i.e.
less than a year after the
presidency of Mohammad Khatami and wrote about it on the Internet at that time.
This time, my visit was also less than a year after presidency of
Hassan Rouhani.
My visit
was a personal family visit. I did not talk to any journalist or activist. But
just talking to ordinary Iranians, I can say about Iran, that the feeling was
not like the first year of Mohammad Khatami's presidency that most journalists
and political activists abroad think of Iran during the presidency of Hassan
Rouhani.
I wrote
the details of what I saw in an article in Persian in May and there is not
anything more I can add to it (1). When I went to Tehran, my preconception was
that the course of events is similar to the first year of Khatami's presidency,
but my observations, to my disbelief, as I have noted in that article, showed me
otherwise.
As time
has passed especially during the last few weeks, it seems to me it is now time
for those living abroad to reevaluate our thinking about the course of events in
Iran.
